SYNOPSIS:
Krishnasakha and Aparna arrive from Germany to make a documentary on the ‘Bohurupees’ (itinerant performers) for a TV channel. They are conversant with Indian culture, so communication with the folk performers is no problem. They discover, however, that a couple of villages where they are shooting are wracked by political disturbance and by the killing mafia goons of rival political parties. The making of the film brings them in contact with interesting local characters who are folk performers. One of them is Subol Mondol, son of a peasant who died when he was a boy. Subol plays the role of Bibek (conscience) and Hanuman in epic yatra plays and also becomes a bohurupi when not performing in the yatra. His close friend Taher Mullick plays Draupadi and Sita in epic folk plays and dons female costume and make-up for his bohurupi performances too. There is a crippled baul singer, who sings beautiful baul songs on the divine love of Krishna and Radha but is forced to sell out his wife to a local political activist, night after night in exchange for money and a self-run wheel-chair. Aparna and Krishnasakha are guests at the sprawling residence of Krishna’s maternal uncle who is disgruntled with the state of political affairs in the area but chooses to stay rooted to the place. Aparna is shocked at the level of poverty these people face and slowly gets involved in their lives. But greater shock awaits her. One day, she finds Subol behind bars. She finds out that he is a scapegoat of the political workers who use him to substitute for the actual goon who has committed the crime. He does it because of poverty though the money he is paid is as paltry as the money he earns from his off-and-on performances. She pays a heavy price for her involvement with Subol and his family consisting of widowed mother, sister and brother. On her way back from Subol’s home, she is raped by the motorcycle goons who ride across the villages at night. Though the political workers know the rapist, they now pounce upon Subol to take his place in prison. This time, Subol is adamant. “I play the role of conscience, I play Hanuman,” he says, “so how can I play a rapist in real life?” he asks indignantly. He runs away to another village to distant relatives of his father, a widow and her widowed daughter who works for a rural upliftment group. He develops an intimate relationship with the young woman. But the goons are after his life and soon catch up with him. Though they offer him good money, this time Subol remains unshakable till they threaten him with torture. The next morning, Subol is found hanging from a tree outside the village temple where he was supposed to be picked up by the police. Did he commit suicide? Or did his ‘bosses’ get him killed and then hung his body from the tree? The documentary remains unfinished because Krishnasakha goes back, hoping to return later. Aparna however, chooses to stay back in the village she has grown to love, as a survivor instead of running away as a loser. Subol’s kid brother dons the bohurupi mask to continue the saga of poverty, hope and dreams.
